I am so amazed to be back in Penang. I had feared that COVID had grounded us forever. I’ve returned to my home in Malaysia.
I’ve returned to the enormous pleasures of Penang,
… reminders of old China… distinctive architecture .. authentic Asian food…beach days…spa days… country drives…evenings at home…wandering in Chinatown…furniture shopping…real estate dreaming…searching for a kitchen god…accepting the decay…relaxing at the Sunday Market…happening upon the past…in awe of tropical weather…finding great Penang books..glad to be home in Penang!!
This time, in search of swimming pools, I treated myself.
The iconic O&E – Oriental and EasternThe gorgeous Seven Terraces where the pool was only dipping size, but the hospitality and history were second to noneThe Lone Pine on the beach with a private stone tub on my balcony!
I determined to drive to the mountain I could see from that beach.
Across the bridge to the mainland, a long drive to the back of the mountain where the road leads to the top.Through coastal villagesSet amid gorgeous countrysideStopping for my favourite road food – nasi lemang- coconut rice cooked in bamboo tubesPast temples of all types, always fascinating. I’ve spent lots of time photographing temples in Georgetown. The Burmese Buddhist TempleThe Cambodian Buddhist TempleThe Goddess of Mercy TempleAnd then, for contrastIf I had to choose, this would be my FAVORITE!
And then there is the food… something Penang is famous for! I go to all my old favorites, then find some new places.
No trip to Penang is complete without a visit to spend time with Izan in KL.
And no trip is complete without some time in Melaka with Nolly!

I do love to spend time at home, too
Where the sun comes through gowns that I’ve hung in the windows.Pretty things that make Villa Saujan in Tanjung Tokong my home in Malaysia
Now I look back at some favorite images and plan for my next time in Penang.
