At first, Oman seems to be a hot, desert country like others in the Gulf.  But in reality, it is that and much more… and essentially Oman is a sea-faring country.  From the more than 2000 kms of coastline, Omanis have lived from the sea for centuries.  Dhows sailed on the monsoons in the arc of the Indian Ocean from Zanzibar to Indonesia… trading Omani pearls, dates and frankincense for spices and rice and fabrics to be sold in Souq Muttrah.  Fishing sustained families and communities and still is the heart of communities like Al Bustan, my home in Oman.
